Humana generally offers three types of dental plans:

  • PPO Plan(s) – Under a PPO plan, you can enjoy benefits for a wide range of dental services and choose between in-network and out-of-network dentists. The wrinkle is that this option has higher monthly premiums and only saves you more money with in-network providers.
  • Dental Value (DHMO) Plan – The Dental Value plan HMO doesn’t involve deductibles, claims, maximums, or waiting periods. Furthermore, it has lower premiums than a dental PPO. Do note, however, that it has a smaller network of dentists to choose from.
  • Dental Savings Plus Plan – Humana’s Dental Savings Plus plan offers 20-40% discounts when you use a dentist in their network.

Only the above PPO plan lets you benefit from out-of-network dentists. Otherwise, you’ll only save money by visiting an in-network provider.

Aside from the details above, coverage under Humana dental plans is fairly steady. Most policies cover dental care according to the following categories:

  • 100% of preventive services. In other words, you don’t have a co-pay for checkups, cleanings, X-rays, etc.
  • 70-80% of basic restorative services. As for relevant examples, these include dental fillings, simple extractions, and emergency pain relief.
  • 50-70% of major restorative services. The most notable of such services are root canal therapy, dentures, dental crowns, and dental implants.

You can expect a Humana dental plan to have a one-year benefit period. (The timeline extends from January to December of the same year.) Also, each one applies yearly maximums and limits to each individual family member. You should thus consult our office to maximize your policy’s benefits and advantages.
